I'm sure all of you have used some form of instant messaging. Whether it's IRC, GTalk, Yahoo, Windows Live, ICQ, even facebook or any other service they're all instant messaging. It is usual for one to have several of these accounts. If you chat with contacts from those accounts it is easy to chat with all of them from a single place rather than logging in to all of them and use various software to chat. That's what a multi-protocol chat client does.
SIP Communicator is such software. You can add SIP, Jabber, AIM/ICQ, MSN, Yahoo! Messenger, IRC, Facebook and many other accounts to it. It also supports audio and video calls. Currently for SIP. It comes with some other cool features too.
And better yet, SIP Communicator is open source! You can contribute the development if you are interested in programming. Since it is developed using java. that means it supports variety of operating systems including linux, windows, mac os
you can take a look on more features here or download it.

Laptops
I'm looking to buy a new laptop. So, I did a little research.
I want a high performance one, so I decided to look for machines with bit higher specifications, after some search, I found 8 different processors that may suit my needs.
notebookcheck.net is a good place to compare
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Processors-Benchmarklist.2436.0.html
Core i7 gives the highest performance. But a drawback is that it requires more power. That means shorter period to work with batteries.
RAM needs to DDR3 obviously, 4GB or more
Next major concern is Graphics. Since I aim graphics programming and gaming, I has to be other than intel. preferably a 1GB. Common cards found in this criteria were nvidia GF230M-GT and ATI 4650.
And WiFi and Bluetooth are must. 15.6 is the common screen size and
Here, HP is more popular these days. Other famous brands include dell, acer, asus, sony.
Though many guys have HP these days, but not very sure about their reliability
Here's what I found. But don't know if this is entirely true
http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-10400447-1.html
However, many high performance laptops available in Sri Lanka are HP.
DV6-2190 (i7), DV6-2510, DV62130, DV6-1316 are available at Technocity(laptop.lk) under Rs. 200k
While surfing the net, I found this cool laptop
Asus G51JX with i7 processor, GF360MGTS, and blueray drive. The price is around $1400 in many online shops . Unfortunately these models aren't here. Even if they were, it'll cost much.
in G51 series, there's a G51JX-3D laptop with 3d glasses from nvidia. for 3d experience( like in avatar game)!
Enough about Asus.
I'm still looking for an affordable laptop with good specifications...

What's happenning
It has been over a year since I created this blog. Just almost forgot about it! Here's the good news(or bad? :p). I decided to write this regularly, though I'm still not sure what exactly to write. I guess I'd focus mainly on technical and other interesting things happening around.
Ok, here's the situation; Even though this is supposed to be our holiday until April, it seems that our lecturers(specially the head of the department) can't go on without seeing our faces :D. So, they've planned many activities during our holiday. Luckily, as of today, half of them are over.
Last Saturday, we had this 'kind of' get together, "Beyond Wavez 2010" of our department. This year our batch organized it. Actually it's an outdoor event that includes funny events and competitions, which was so much fun.
We have drama competition next month. Still have no idea about it ><
And this is the initial stage of Exhibition of our department which in going to be held on July. It's for the 25th anniversary of department of computer science and engineering of our university
Apart from those, I'm reading a little bit about GSoC(Google summer of code). Hmm, it seems tough. Better give it a try anyway :)
Ok, that's all I can think of right now. Hope to keep this updated
